DocData

Work in progress

I am currently updating all my plugins from version 1 to version 2. In the process, I am updating the relevant Web pages.

Welcome

Welcome to Michèle’s DocData plugin, designed to run three tasks: DocStats, UserData and ImagesList.

Return to plugins section. Return to the Home page.

General information

Plugin name: DocData
Version: 2.0.0 – 10/28/26
Fee: Free
Availability: Available in Adobe Marketplace
Source code in book:  Adobe InDesign Automation of Nonfiction Books via JavaScript

Requirements

There are no specific requirements for this plugin to do its job. It cycles through the document to gather data which it reports via a dialog box and via a DocStats.txt file in the plugins directory: C:/Users/<user>/…/External/XXXX/PluginData where XXXX is the plugin’s ID, a unique Adobe attributed number.

What it does

DocData (2.0.0) runs three tasks: DocStats, UserData and ImagesList. The provide an HTML-based user interface and enable opening their corresponding readme files by clicking on their respective ReadMe buttons.

DocStats

DocStats (2.0.0) skims through an InDesign document to provide metrics such as number of characters, paragraphs, tags, etc. You will find the complete list below. Please note that DocStats should be run before and after processing the document, and just before sending in to the printers to ensure that there are no stray automation-related tags left behind.

ImagesList

Most nonfiction books contain images to illustrate concepts. The ImagesList task lists the documents ismages, their name, page #, size, resolution, width and height.

UserData

Some of the automation plugins require predefined data such as text wrapping around images, maximum automation tag sizes, top-of-page dimensions and more.  These are hard coded as defaults and registered in the userData.json file located in plugin’s Plugin’s data folder. The UserData task enables customizing these hard coded user data settings.

Please note that all tasks provide a button which enables opening their respective ReadMe content.
